“Chek” Aini from Group 8 says:
Group 8 was a vibrant group. Students were very interested and curious in the flora and fauna they came upon. We saw durian trees with a couple of fruits hanging and rambutan trees with many bunches of green, unripe rambutans. The wells that we came across along the way attracted our attention since it is not very often that we see physical wells in Singapore. We saw trees from where attap chee is obtained. The leaves of this tree is used for making attap roofs for village houses. We were shown mud lobster mounds. These mud lobsters are not usually sighted but if the mud mounds look very wet, it means the mud lobsters just dug it up not long ago. We were shown a pile of coffee beans on the ground. Apparently, these coffee beans have been eaten by a species of cat called Sivet cats. These cats usually pick the best beans to eat then pass them out in a pile. In some foreign countries, these digested coffee beans are collected and sold as they make marvelous-tasting coffee called ‘kopi luak’. We saw fiddler crabs and mud skippers in the mangrove swamps. We even sighted a monitor lizard in the grasses which got the students rather excited. Altogether, we thoroughly enjoyed the walk even though it was a sunny and hot day.
